Sioux City: Gem of the Midwest
Once a Midwest Cowtown and industrial center, Sioux City has long left those days in the past.

Sioux City has a rich history and an even more promising future. Located on the Missouri River, Sioux City held an important role in the settlement of the Midwest. Named for the Yankton Sioux which first inhabited the area, the city has connections to Meriwether Lewis and William Clark who traveled through in 1804. A member of their expedition, named Sergeant Charles Floyd, died in Sioux City. This is noteworthy because Floyd was the only person to die during the two and a half-year expedition. The city was officially founded in 1854 and has flourished ever since.
Though none of us were around when Sioux City was settled, the city retains the fortitude and ingenuity of those original pioneers. Now with a population of 83,193, the city enjoys a mix of young professionals, families with children, and senior citizens. The local economy is strong, with Tyson Fresh Meats, Sioux City Community School District, Bomgaar's, Seaboard Triumph Foods, Mercy Medical Center, Unity Point Health – St. Luke’s, Hard Rock Casino Sioux City, Hy-Vee, 185th Iowa Air National Guard, and City of Sioux City rounding out the top 10 employers, according to the city’s 2018 comprehensive annual financial report.
The city’s growth is reflected in its suburbs and surrounding communities. Construction and development in Dakota Dunes, Dakota City, Sergeant Bluff and South Sioux City, NE, to name a few, are thriving. This makes the options for homes and apartments in Sioux City more accommodating and diverse.
